Circum-Cyprus in 2010

The lack of assurances about the possibility of crossing the boundaries between the north and the south (the "Buffer Zone"; under UN troops control) forces us to postpone the date of departure. The group of kayakers (Giacomo Della Gatta, Piero De Stefano, Giuseppe Di Mauro and Francesco Petralia) expects to have permits in the spring of 2010, and be able to start before next summer.
The aim of the trip will be to navigate along the wild coast of the island. Nautical camping, lack of support from the ground and then total autonomy will be the main features of the trip. Watermaker and solar panels will allow autonomy for water and electricity (GPS, VHF, etc.). Key points for each type of expedition.

La mancanza di assicurazioni sulla possibilità di attraversare i confini tra la parte Nord e la parte Sud (la "Buffer Zone" controtrollata dalle truppe ONU), ci costringe a posticipare la data di partenza. Il gruppo di kayakers (Giacomo Della Gatta, Piero De Stefano, Giuseppe Di Mauro e Francesco Petralia) conta di avere i permessi nella primavera del 2010, e poter partire prima dell'estate prossima.
L'obiettivo del viaggio sarà quello di navigare lungo le selvaggie coste dell'isola. Campeggio nautico, assenza di appoggio da terra e quindi totale autosufficenza saranno le caratteristiche principali del viaggio. Mini dissalatore e pannelli solari consentiranno di avere autonomia sia per l'acqua che per l'energia elettrica (alimentazione GPS, VHF, etc.) punti chiave per ogni tipo di spedizione.

Postponed departure date

Few months ago me, Piero and Giacomo took the decision to postpone the departure date for Cyprus after the Vulcanoa Marathon Sea Kayak Symposium that we are organizing from 1st to 8th october 2009 at Aeolian Islands.

The plan is that 25th october we will travel by car across Italy, Greece and Turkey, and we will arrive by ferry in the north turkish side of the island...

The big news is that probably Giuseppe (the kayaks' builder) will join us, in order to test "on the field" with the team the kayak prototype. A 526 HV is in this moment in Palermo, in the hands of Giacomo, and we seriously started to considering the possibility to use two different hulls for Cyprus... It's now taken the decision to go with the prototype!

Alcuni mesi fa io, Piero e Giacomo abbiamo preso la decisione di posticipare la data di partenza per Cipro dopo il Simposio di Kayak da Mare Vulcanoa Marathon che stiamo organizzando alle isole Eolie dal primo all'8 ottobre 2009.

Il piano prevede che il 25 ottobre partiremo in auto attraversando l'Italia, la Grecia e la Turchia, arrivando con il traghetto sul lato nord turco dell'isola...

La grande notizia è che probabilmente Giuseppe (il costruttore dei kayak) si unirà a noi, per testare con il resto del team "sul campo" i prototipi di kayak. Un 526 HV si trova in questo momento nelle mani di Giacomo, a Palermo, e stiamo seriamente considerando la possibilità di utilizzare due scafi differenti per Cipro... E' ormai presa la decisione di partire con dei prototipi!

New Kayak Test

The kayak we will go to use in Cyprus have been tested already three times and each time we make some little modifications on the hull. The last test was very satisfactory and still few things remain to do. We can only anticipate that this is the high volume version of the 526 we used in Scotland.
Il kayak che useremo a Cipro è stato testato già tre volte ed ogni volta abbiamo apportato piccole modifiche allo scafo. L'ultimo test è stato molto soddisfacente e rimangono da fare solo alcune cose. Possiamo anticipare soltanto che questo sarà la versione alto volume del 526 che abbiamo utilizzato in Scozia.

The birthplace of Aphrodite

According to the verses of Homer, the goddess of love Aphrodite was born from the foam of the sea and arrived on the coast of Cyprus on a shell. For this reason Cyprus is described in tourist brochures like the island of love. But that's not for this we are going down there...

The main objective of the team is to circumnavigate the island by kayak, which, to our knowledge, nobody before has ever done in one session. The challenge does not end here though, in fact, with the cooperation of environmental association ARC (Animal Responsibility Cyprus), we intend to sensitize the public and young Cypriots in respecting the wildlife, especially the colonies of bats threatened with extinction that live in some sea caves. Other species that we could meet and document, which are also at risk are sea turtles and monk seals.

Therefore help us to protect these little friends by following and supporting our adventure!

Secondo i versi di Omero la dea dell'amore, Afrodite, nacque dalla schiuma del mare e arrivò sulle coste di Cipro su una conchiglia. Cipro è infatti definita nei depliant turistici l'isola dell'amore. Ma non è per questa ragione che andiamo fin laggiù...

L'obiettivo principale è circumnavigare l'isola in kayak, cosa che, a nostra conoscenza, nessuno prima d'ora ha mai compiuto in un'unica sessione. La nostra sfida non si esaurisce qui però, infatti, con la collaborazione dell'associazione ambientalistica ARC (Animal Responsibility Cyprus), intendiamo sensibilizzare l'opinione pubblica e i giovani ciprioti nel rispetto dell'ambiente, in particolare di alcune grotte marine in cui vivono delle colonie di pipistrelli minacciati di estinzione. Altre specie che potremmo incontrare e documentare, anch'esse a rischio, sono le tartarughe marine e la foca monaca, anticamente presente anche in Italia.
